Theme: Mapping

This unit deals with position and location both locally and globally. Stories and activities offer opportunities to study and/or design maps (such as treasure maps, weather maps and world maps) and use map-related language e.g. key, legend and cardinal points.

It is vital for teachers to understand the Ziptales 10 stage Reading Scheme, which governs how reading groups can be formed in a way which matches children’s abilities to the appropriate texts. To check on this essential resource - click here.

Assessment Ideas

Spelling/Grammar
  • Generate a spelling list related to mapping for students to learn using words such as: key, legend, ocean, city, state, territory, isobar, symbol, landmark and location.
  • Use the Word Work and Spelling and Vocabulary Worksheets for the Reading Library stories to improve students’ spelling skills.
  • Put each of the words from the spelling list in sentences that display the use of speech marks.
  • Select a passage from one of the on-line stories as dictation assessing use of capital letters.
Reading
  • Complete the Fill the Gaps and Multiple Choice questions at the end of the story (available for the Junior Readers, Reading Library and Advanced Library genre stories).
  • Use the Learning Support Worksheets for the Reading Library stories to practise a range of reading skills.
  • Use one or more of the on-line stories to write descriptions of the characters in the format of a ‘Who Am I?’
  • Design a front cover for one of the on-line stories.
Writing
  • You find a strange map and X marks the spot. Write a narrative about what happens next.
  • Imagine you are embarking on the trip of a lifetime around Australia. Use a map of Australia to write a diarised account of your journey.
  • Use a local street directory to write a list of instructions about how to travel to school from your home.
Oral Language
  • In pairs, study a map of the world identifying the top five places you would like to visit stating reasons for each.
  • Present an oral information report about the equator, the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer.
  • In small groups, present a slide show presentation about the continents of the world.
